Cardinal Rules of EMG 2: When in Doubt, Always Think about Technical Factors
Abstract
It is very important to understand and recognize the physiologic and technical factors in every nerve conduction and electromyographic study. Failure to take these factors into account can lead to difficulty in obtaining potentials, prolong study, and result in the mistaken impression of pathology. Among such factors, technical factors, if not taken into account, often result in a multitude of artifacts, which can interfere with the accuracy of the results and their subsequent interpretation. When in doubt, always think about technical factors.
Key Words: Nerve conduction study, technical, errors.
