Current Perception Threshold in Different Age, Sex and Body Parts
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the normal values of current perception threshold (CPT) and the difference ofCPT between different age groups, both sexes and different body parts.
Method: We have recorded CPT studies in 111 normal Korean adults. CPT was measured at the 1st and5th finger along with the 1st and 5th toe by delivering several repetitions of three different frequencies (2000Hz, 250 Hz and 5 Hz) of currents.
Results: The mean CPT showed significant correlation with age, sex and body parts at 2000 Hz (p<0.05).Old age, male, and the toe were factors that resulted in mean CPT increase at 2000 Hz. When stimulatedat 250Hz, the correlation in CPT was observed only at the 5th finger with age but did not show any correlationwith sex (p<0.05). At 5Hz, the negative correlation in CPT was observed at the 1th toe with age(p<0.05).
Conclusion: In this study, we are able to report normal CPT reference values and we hope our result canbe a useful reference value for interpretation of CPT results.
